Getting to Madrid

Spain’s largest and busiest airport, located just 20 minutes from the city center. With direct flights to and from major cities around the world, it offers a smooth and well-connected arrival to Madrid.

Getting Around the City

Getting around Madrid is easy, safe, and enjoyable.

The city’s public transportation system is one of the best in Europe, with a clean and efficient metro, buses, and trains connecting every neighborhood. Taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber, Cabify, and Bolt are also widely available. But perhaps the best way to explore Madrid is on foot—its walkable streets, charming plazas, and lively corners are best discovered at your own pace.

  • Metro & buses: Easy to navigate. A multi transport card is available for rechargeable rides.

  • Uber / Cabify / Bolt: Available throughout the city.

  • Taxis: Can be hailed on the street or booked through the FreeNow app.

  • Bike: Madrid’s electric bike-sharing service, Bicimad, is a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the city.

Tip: Parking in central Madrid can be quite limited, so we only recommend renting a car if absolutely necessary or if you plan to travel outside the city.

Basics

A few travel tips and facts to make your stay even smoother and more enjoyable.

Language: Spanish. English is widely spoken in hotels and restaurants.

Currency: Madrid uses the euro (€) as its official currency, but it’s a largely cashless city — most shops, restaurants, taxis, and venues accept all major credit and debit cards, including contactless payments via mobile (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.).
That said, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases or local spots. You can withdraw euros from ATMs at most banks, typically with a fee of around €4 per transaction, using your home bank’s exchange rate.

Weather in August: Hot and dry (around 30–35°C / 86–95°F). Pack light clothing and your best outfit for the wedding.

Electricity: European plugs (Type F), 230V. You may need an adapter if traveling from outside Europe.

Mobile Data: To stay connected during your trip, we recommend getting an eSIM with a local data plan, which is often more affordable and reliable than using international roaming from your home provider.
We suggest using Holafly — a trusted eSIM service for travelers. Use the code MYESIMNOW5 for a discount.

Health Coverage: We recommend that European guests bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), and that guests traveling from outside Europe check that their travel insurance includes international medical coverage.
